Why are children expected to fill the gender roles that society has set for them?

It makes it easier to discriminate against one half of the population. If we condition girls to be "soft" then we can use that as an excuse to keep them down and out of the way. If we condition them to be "pretty" then we can use that as an excuse to objectify them and maintain male dominance and ownership.
